This is first and foremost a murder mystery- the ghosts do not actually affect the plot's direction much at all. I love ghosts, so it surprised me that I was actually okay with that and really enjoyed solving the mystery of what is going on in the house. The isolation- through putting them on a cut off stormy island- was a fabulous idea as it creates tension.
Additionally, I liked the use of multiple narrators. Occasionally I was thrown by Lord and Lady Highmount suddenly having their own chapters when Kate and Donovan are clearly the focus, but it didn't take me out of the novel too much.
Kate is sharp but relatable, and Donovan is a classically mysterious rogue- both supremely likable. Their interactions with each other are fun and it doesn't feel like they are just thrown together for an obvious romance. They take their time to get to know each other.
Overall, a really interesting and easy read.
