This is such a beautifully written and atmospheric mystery with ghostly elements that add an extra later of intrigue. The setting is Winter 1917, in a haunted abbey on Blackwater Island off the Devon Coast. Throughout the story we get to meet and delve in to the past of an array of interesting characters who have been invited to stay at Blackwater Abbey by the owner Lord Highmount. Due to the loss of his sons during the war, and the losses of his other guests he invites them under the guise of holding a spiritualist gathering to try and make contact with those departed. However, there is more than meets the eye and the guests are connected in many clever yet terrible ways. When a dangerous storm occurs trapping everyone on the island, the guests are unaware that death is lurking just around the corner.

I particularly enjoyed the relationship between Mr Donovan and Miss Cartwright who were tasked with working together to solve the mystery behind the guests connections and who was therefore responsible for the injuries and death amongst the abbey's residents. The haunted atmosphere was so vividly captured and detailed and I particularly liked the clever twists along the way!
