At first glance I thought this would not appeal to me at all. However the focus on building up the characters and their relationships in the first four chapters had me soon hooked. A small cast of likeable and interesting characters (likeable doesn’t include the master of the house, Judge Kettle of course) have made me want to read more to find out if any of them can escape the tyranny of their oppressive master and whether the timid and kind-hearted Madeline will manage to find a better life for her and he yet to be born child.
The extract doesn’t seem to relate to the blurb much which makes me feel even more intrigued to read more to discover the fate of the characters.
