The opening pages didn't engage my interest!

Maybe it's because I've read a number of books recently which were set in WWII but I just didn't feel engaged enough with the characters in this story to feel that I want to discover what happens as the story progresses. However, it's clear that this author (I've never read any of her earlier books) has a huge fan base so I'm sure they will be delighted if I remove myself from the draw!
