This book is the third in a series based around the Brogan family, who are living in the East End of London during the blitz. However, it is possible to read this one without having read the previous two books - as indeed I did.

I don't actually read a lot of historical fiction normally, but I thought I might enjoy this having grown up in the East End myself, and it turned out to be a lovely read! I'm not sure about the first two books, but this one centred around Ida, the matriarch of the family. As you would expect, there is a lot of detail about the war itself and the effects it has on the family, but there is also a separate storyline about Ida, her marriage troubles, and a long-standing friendship that may make these troubles worse. I loved Ida's character - she was so strong, and always trying to do her best to make everyone happy.

A really good read, I would recommend even if this is not your normal thing.
