A thought-provoking, but easy read following the adventures of the Brogan family as they live through the Blitz in the East End of London.

Along with the atrocities of war, Ida Brogan, has to cope with the discovery that her husband Jerimiah, has had a child by another woman, and cope with being asked to stretch her forgiveness and tolerance to levels most of us couldn't do.

I liked this a lot more than a Ration Book Christmas, and love the character of Queenie, the somewhat maverick, slightly loopy mother of Ida's husband.

The book offers some insight into the perils of living in wartime London, rationing, as well as the social expectations of the time. It also puts things into perspective, and made me think about how easy we have it today.

All in all a pretty good read or wartime London, covering all manner of characters, expectations and hardships.
