This is the first time I have come across the Brogan family and am now keen to read the other books in the series, although this can be read as a standalone as I did. This is a lovely book set in wartime and reminded me of the stories my gran used to tell me about life during the war and the authors writing captures the atmosphere and emotions and difficulties of life during wartime. It is a great piece of historical fiction which centres on world war II. The characters are very easy to relate to and fall in love with. Ida Brogan is the mother of the family and the one who is at the centre of the home living with her husband Jeremia, mother in law Queenie, youngest daughter Jo and son Billy she puts everyone else first and has a heart of gold.

Ida's life is turned upside down and things start to take a turn for the worst in her life when an old friend returns to town with a secret. The book was an emotional read with a few tears along the way
