Firstly, I love historical fiction and this book is set in wartime Britain. The cover grabs my attention with its retro vibe, the clothes, hairdos and of course the bunting! The title, A Ration Book Childhood, conjures up images of dirty faces, make do and mend clothing and one pot dinners stretching to however many mouths there were to feed. Funny, although these were hard times, my grandparents look back on the “good old days” fondly.
The story focuses on the Brogan Family, with Queenie the head of the family. I think she’s very funny and gives quite a few laughs, not easy in wartime. Ida is married to Queenie's son Jeremiah, and their children, are all grown up, with the exception of Billy. Ida and Jeremiah also have grandchildren. They struggle with life like many did during the war but their love sees them through...
However an old friend, who has been widowed, shows up with a child, the image of Jeremiah!
I don’t want to spoil it for you, but definitely buy this book. I loved it and didn’t want to put it down. The good news is there are more books in this genre from the same author.
