Having previously read Jean Fullerton books, I thought that I would be in for a real treat when I started on this, and I was not disappointed! Based during the war, this book tells the story of the Brogan family, a close knit family, who are struggling to survive as the bombs fall around them. Ida Brogan is a strong woman who holds the family together, eking out their rations she tries to make sure they all have enough. Her husband, attempts to build his delivery and furniture business to bring in an income to support his family. They often have not much to live on, and life is tough, but they are family and families stick together.

One day Ida's oldest friend returns to the area, but it is not just a visit to her dear friend but she comes with news which threatens to rock the bonds of the close family ties. Ida is heartbroken by the news and needs to find a way to forgive her friend but can she? Can she support her friend with what she needs?

I thought this was a lovely story, and I enjoyed reading about the characters in Ida's life. It also makes you realise how tough things must of been for those who lived through those times.
