As the title shows this is a story set in the second world War. It gives a good picture of the hardships faced by ordinary families during the blitz. Most people are keen to do their bit to help. The Brogan family are no exception and are all involved in some form of war work apart from Queenie who makes money taking illegal bets. The main theme of this story is the sudden discovery that Ida's husband fathered a son ten years ago. Ida has to deal with her feelings and decide if she can ever accept what has happened. The book is an easy read but I found it irritating at times with frequent repetitions of the same things for example references to the scarlet ribbon.
