I am not old enough to remember what life was like in the second world war, but I have watched films and read books on the subject so I do have some idea of what life may have been like for ordinary working class people of the time. This book certainly takes the reader back to the days of the blitz for those living in London at the time.
Although the war was only a backdrop to this story , it certainly got me thinking about how people managed to cope during the days of food rationing and blackouts. As if all that was not enough, the poor woman in this story has to cope with something very serious in her personal life that would affect not only her marriage but her whole family life.
There is a secret that comes to light very early on in the story when Ida meets an old friend who she has not seen for years. The meeting should have been a happy one but it is marred by the fact that her old friend is obviously very ill, and there is some thing else as well.
