I really enjoyed reading A Ration Book Christmas, which I won from Readers First last year, so I was very excited when I got the opportunity to read and review A Ration Book Childhood. The Brogan Family live in the East End of London and are an average family in British wartime during World War II. Several members of the family have now grown up and have families of their own. I thought the book was a little slow in beginning as we were once again told the sorry of Ida Brogan, her mother Queenie and the other family members. However, if you have not read the other books in the triology that may help you for context as you do not have to have read them to enjoy the book. An absolute clanger is dropped at the end of Chapter One, which shocked me as I can image it shocked those who have read one or the other books before this, and the rest of the book is a mix of drama as the personal and public lives of the Brogan family try to be repaired. A real pageturner from the end of the first chapter on. The characters are made real, authentic, believable and relatable with a mix of factual context and fictional lives. A great read from this talented author.
