Good introduction to the two main threads that run through the story. You have Tommy Steele and his vaguely criminal brothers, dealing with a neglectful mother and his wish to "better" himself. Then you have Jo and her brother Billy who are evacuees and not having the best time of it - a situation that I am sure many found themselves in.
The writing flows well and envelops you in nostalgia for a time you didn't even live through. Although, I am now craving pie, mash and liquor!
