Set in London's East End during the Blitz it is the story of Jo Brogan and Tommy Sweete and their budding romance. Jo comes from a loving Irish family while Tommy's mother is a drunk and his brother Reggie an East End criminal. The romance doesn't run smoothly thanks to the meddling of Reggie. Jo joins the Ambulance Service working long hours during the horrors of the Blitz.
I really enjoyed this book, which had more substance to it than i thought at first especially looking at the cover. It told of the horror of being bombed every night by the Luftwaffe so well I become lost in the story. But there was laughter, romance, a loving family and sibling quarrels, plus some war time recipes on the back pages. I really enjoyed this book and wondered if there will be a follow up book as I would love to know what Jo and Tommy's live will be like as the war progresses. A good read.
