I enjoyed this far more than I thought I would. At first glance it's one of those festive period romances where every gal get her guy. As it says on the cover "Love is never in short supply" but this is actually more to do with family love. The love between parents and siblings.
The central theme is the romance between Tommy, from the wrong side of the tracks, and Jo, the tinker's daughter, but this doesn't overwhelm the story in any way.
Tommy's brother Reggie is a chancer and living on the edge of jail time whilst Jo's family provide plenty of side plots.
All based around the Christmas of 1940 and constant bombing by the Luftwaffe you really get a feel for the history and struggles of wartime.
There's even a selection of recipes at the back should you wish to recreate a wartime Christmas dinner - I think I'll pass on the stuffed Ox heart though!
