This is rather a sad book, as books about the war often are. Two children, one ten years old and one seventeen, are evacuated. They are sent to a small town where everyone knows each other and the local bobby has been around for ever. The shop keeper of the general store takes them in because she is seduced by the money she receives for each child. She works the girl to death in the shop and she is extremely unkind to the boy. They are both very unhappy and just want to go home to the East End of London. Meanwhile, in London, Jo, the girl has a young man pining for her. Has she gone off him? Is that why she stopped writing to him?
This is a simplistic book about separation, love and hope. It is well written, with characters that easily come to life. A joy to read.
