A Ration Book Christmas is the heart-warming but dramatic story of daily life in the East End of London during the Blitz, centred on the Brogan family. The author creates a convincing sense of the period and conveys the courage and fortitude of those who lived through that period when bomber raids and fear of invasion added to the daily struggle to 'keep calm and carry on'.

As someone not usually drawn to books with romantic story lines, I nevertheless found myself engaged in the ups and downs of the love lives of the various characters.

I really liked the detail about the food, clothing and music of the period. Some of my favourite scenes were those in the traditional pie and mash shop! The inclusion at the back of the book of recipes from that formidable matriarch of the Brogan clan, Ida, was a lovely bonus.
