I have always been enamoured with books set in the Second World War, it adds to the stories my nana used to tell me about her time working in the factories. Most of these books however, carry a sense of bittersweet sadness and a heartache that can only be felt for ghosts of the past. But this book (although it holds its fair share of heartache) completely immersed me. The characters were so well written and the worn torn romance only drives this novels charm further. Not to glorify the horrors of the war, but plays tribute to it in such a beautiful way, by presenting many sides of the tale. From the women, the mothers, to the men and the romance. I have read many books that fail to achieve such success with keeping the balance of a romance without romanticising the war but this novel is different. It’s a perfect balance. I will definitely follow the series!
