I think that it puts the perspective of the Blitz, and the war, into one of a mother/wife's thoughts. Cathy seems to be a recently wedded woman to her husband, Stanley, who seems to be an extreme right wing soldier with violence as his options. However hard life is, she must go along with it for the fate of her son.
