The Ration Book Daughter by Jean Fullerton was a very different book to the genres I tend to read. It was my first venture into historical books and sagas; I find learning about the world wars quite interesting so it was the perfect place to start. Being set in London’s East End, I found similarities in the setting and time period to the show Call the Midwife, which I also enjoy. I really enjoyed learning more about what life was like for people during this time period.

I thought that this book was very well written and the author Jane Fullerton managed to keep me engaged throughout the book. Each chapter wasn’t too long which I liked as I could dip in and out of the book, reading a little each time. I thought the pacing of the book was good

At the beginning of the book, Cathy is quite sad and has gone through lots of difficulties in her life. It was lovely to read that she got happier throughout the book- I am glad that she got the happiness she deserved.

This book is part of a series and I would have appreciated that being mentioned when I read the details on First Reads. It was okay to read as a standalone but I will be checking out the previous and future books in the series to go back into this great reading world.

To conclude, I would definitely recommend this book
