The cover of the book is in keeping with the time it is set, the second world war years. It continues the story of the Brogan family, focussing on Cathy as the main character.
At the beginning of the book you meet her overbearing, nasty mother- in -law Violet and get a taste of what her home life is like. Violet dotes on her son Stanley and even insists on referring to his son as Stanley instead of Peter. He is a violent, vindictive man who is reported as missing in action, much to Cathy's relief. Violet constantly tells lies about Cathy to anyone who will listen.
The story follows Cathy's life as a volunteer worker and that of Archie who is a sergeant in a bomb disposal unit in the East End.
Jean Fullerton is a master of period detail and really brings the characters to life. There is suspense in the story, will Stanley come home and upset the blossoming love affair between Cathy and Archie? Will his commanding officer Monkman get them blown up?
