I won't lie, historical novels are not my first choice of book, so I was a bit apprehensive to read 'The Ration Book Daughter'. However, from the blurb and initial first read, I was more interested due to the love-story premise. I also have not read any of the previous Ration Book series, so wasn't sure whether this would make a difference.

Well, I definitely enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would! I was really impressed with the author for including so much war-based research, and detail, and I'm assuming this is a common theme throughout her series. The book began with an introduction into Cathy's life, and her history with her abusive husband; however, I was most touched and emotionally-gripped by the relationship with her mother in law, who definitely comes across as a manipulative character. Cathy meets Archie quite early on in the book, and it is clear that there is an instant connection between the two of them. I was hooked on the development of this love story, and I found the book emotional and sad, yet totally heart-warming. The relationship between Archie and Cathy moved quickly, and although at times their love story was quite predictable, it was definitely enjoyable and emotional to follow it along.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone fancying a new genre, or existing fans of Jean Fullerton's novels.
