Excellent latest installment of the series
Young mother Cathy works in the new donated clothing area of her church as part of the Women's Voluntary Service for the War Effort. While her ex-convict husband Stan is away fighting in North Africa, she gets a reprieve from his abusive behaviour. She is not so lucky with mother-in-law from hell Violet, who criticises everything Cathy does for the War Effort, her parenting, and expects to be waited on hand and foot. Violet will never forgive Cathy's family for being responsible for Stan going to prison for colluding with the enemy, until he was forced to join the army in Africa.
When Stan is reported missing, Cathy takes in a lodger to bring in some much needed income. Enter Sergeant Archie McIntosh. He from the bomb squad and is not white. Violet sees a friendship develop between the two and causes all manner of trouble for Cathy with the church and the WVS.
