Another lovely story about the Brogan family during the Blitz. This time, the story is about Cathy and her lodger, Archie, who is a sergeant in the bomb disposal unit. Cathy’s abusive husband, Stanley, is declared missing in action and Cathy is looking forward to the day when she will be declared a widow, free from the spite of his vindictive, evil mother and can marry Archie but unfortunately things do not go to plan. This story deals with racism and class prejudice as well as portraying what everyday life was like for families living in London during the Blitz. I love this series of stories although they are not my usual choice of reading matter. I feel I know this family pretty well after five books and I always feel uplifted by the end of each book. I note that the next book in the series is A Ration Book Victory. This suggests it may be the final one in the series but I hope it isn’t.
