I’m not a huge fan of romantic novels, historical or otherwise, and I was worried that I was dipping into the middle of a family saga with this book.

I was delighted to find that the novel stands up perfectly on its own. It may provide a ‘richer’ read for those who have followed that saga but it really isn’t necessary to know what has gone before.

I was also pleased to find more than just another wartime romance story.

The author’s attention to detail is wonderful, really allowing the reader to become immersed in the lifestyle of the characters.

I found the insight into the Royal Engineer Bomb Disposal teams, which of course were still in their infancy at the time, quite fascinating. A grim task which the author portrays very well.

Then the author gives us the Bethnal Green Tube Disaster, which is remarkable for being, it is believed, the largest loss of civilian life during WWII in the UK. And our characters are slap bang in the middle of it.

Yes, I was happy to find a good amount of historical content alongside the romance. I may even be tempted to read the whole saga.

Thank you to Readers First, Corvus and Fiona Fullerton for the ARC in return for my honest review.
