I haven’t read the other books in this series, but luckily you don’t need to have read them to fully appreciate this book.
The detail in this book was great and it is brilliantly researched which I think is really important for historical fiction, and meant I could really imagine the way they were living, and it was completely immersive. It also made the book very atmospheric and really helped the story develop realistically.
I enjoyed the characterisation in this book, I thought they were developed well as the story progressed and I was really rooting for them (or against them for certain characters).
There was a bit of light humour in a few places but I feel like there could have been a bit more of this throughout the book.
I would definitely recommend this book to any romance or historical fiction fans, or anyone wanting to give these genres a try.
