This is the first book I have read from this author. It followed the journey of a mum during the war. The husband was missing and the book effectively explored the concerns and worries of the mother.
This book is well written, with lots of good moments. It is one of those books you need to pay close attention to and not leave it for weeks, like I did, however, if you stick with it, I am sure you will like it.
I think the first half of the book especially is very engaging. I immediately wanted to find out about the main characters, and therefore, the author was very effective here. I could really imaging Cathy's mother in law as the kind of individual she is made out to be, however, the descriptions of Cathy's husband are the most effective in my opinion.
For anyone who love history and reading, this is a perfect book as it combines them both! It is not very long either, so would be enjoyable to many.
