I’ve not read any of the previous ration book series and although I presume they feature the same characters I didn’t find myself feeling like I was missing any backstory. The main characters in this are Cathy and Archie, Cathy is grateful her husband is away fighting as it is not a happy marriage although she still lives with her despised mother-in-law, thankfully she takes great pleasure in her son Peter and her own family are a great support to her. Archie is a Sergeant in the bomb disposal squad and lives far from him family back in Glasgow. Struggling financially Cathy takes in Archie as a lodger much to her mother-in-laws disgust.

There’s some excellent camaraderie in this and it felt very well researched for the time, the day to day stuff and the events of the time are really well depicted, the characters are well developed and the relationships between them are well written. I found this enjoyable and easy to read and it’s not even in honesty my usual style but I would happily read the other Ration Book stories.
