The cover of this book instantly gives you an image of Cathy and Peter and it is so easy to picture them in all the situations they face. All the characters are beautifully described and you are transported back to wartime London during the blitz. The hardships that so many faced are brought to life and it makes you truly thankful not to be living in those times. It also makes you realise how much equality has moved on and how much freedom we are now able to enjoy. The love that develops between Cathy and Archie is so genuine and contrasts so well against Vi's vitriol and animosity. So nice to see her get her just rewards. Throughout the book I was convinced that Stanley would return and ruin things for Cathy but so glad that he didn't and he was revealed to be the coward that he truly was, as is so often the case with violent partners. A really enjoyable read.
