Fantastic read.
For me this book was just a fantastic read. Cathy the main female character is set in the back drop of the london bombings and her husband (who from what you gather was abusive and nasty fellow) currently missing while she looks after her son Peter. She is living with Violet her vindictive mother in law when she meets Archie a bomb disposal sergeant. It takes the view from each of these three characters. Violet who sees her son as a doting boy who to her is the apple of her eye and Cathy a horrid daughter in law she actively rallies against. Archie with his own back drop of being multi cultural and the daily struggles of the racist people back then and his feels for Cathy.
Cathy herself who becomes her own person and doesnt back down from racism or class struggle that's underline at her rest centre. The characters a beautifully written and each has depth. Even the side characters each seem to have there own back story. I enjoyed every page of this book I loved the story it told and the underlining tones of racism it highlighted at that time.
