Well Jean Fullerton has done it again! A Ration Book Daughter is a thoughtful and moving story of a woman called Cathy’s marriage against the backdrop of the Second World War. Cathy is married to an abusive man named Stanley who is conscripted and send off to war. She has to endure a bitter and controlling mother in law who treats her despicably but Cathy stays strong for her little baby Peter. Cathy is a lovely mother who very clearly loves her baby. I really liked Archie, I wished they had explored his character a but more outside of Cathy but I found their romance so endearing in contrast to her marriage with Stanley. I think Cathy’s story is reminiscent of so many women’s stories who were stuck in abusive marriages but could not leave. My only qualm is that I don’t like the cover - I feel like there could be better cover art for this series but that is definitely me nitpicking!
