Overall, I found this book a satisfying and enjoyable read. I soon became invested in the various characters, although I had not appreciated before I started reading that this was part of a series rather than being a stand alone book. I would have benefitted by reading the other book/books about the Brogan family prior to this one but there was enough explanation to make it easy to follow and I soon became familiar with the various characters. Although there were numerous people to follow, it was written in such a way that the reader did not become lost or confused. The book moved backwards and forwards between the main character's childhood in the late 1800s to the later days of the Second World War. Again, it was always clear which era each part of the book was in. Although I enjoyed both settings, when in the wartime parts I found myself eager for the book to go back to 1800s Ireland. I would be interested in reading the earlier books and the ending made it appear that at least one further book in the series is intended.
