Although the front cover of the book is in a style that would not normally appeal to me it did indeed draw me in. I think that’s because it’s a comforting reminder of the photographs of family weddings with men in uniform that were proudly displayed in my grandparents’ house as I grew up.

The opening chapters of the book set the scene for the story and introduce the characters and period well, alternating between the experiences of a Francesca, a plucky young girl supporting the war effort at home, and Charlie, away at war in the African desert.

When Charlie is injured during an attack against his unit and subsequently shipped home to recuperate many questions arise for the reader. What will become of Charlie’s failing marriage to the glamorous Stella? Will Francesca apply for the job at the broadcasting company? Will Francesca and Charlie’s paths cross once more and what will come of it if they do? I for one can’t wait to read on and find out!
