I've loved all The Ration Book Series of books and A Ration Book Wedding is no exception. Jean Fullerton writes so knowledegeably about life in the East End of London during the Second World War and has the knack of bringing her characters to life and making them so real to her readers. It was great to reacquaint myself with the Brogan and Fabrino families and how they are coping as the war progresses. In this book Charlie Brogan suffers an injury to his shoulder while serving with the army in Africa and returns to Britain to recover. He is allowed home in time for the wedding of his sister Jo and the brith of his sister Mattie's second child. Francesca Fabrino is a long-term friend to Mattie and a friend to all the Brogan family and has been in love with Charlie since they were teenagers. Charlie however married Stella when she fell pregnant with their son. Fran has been working in a factory but, with her knowledge of Italian, gets a job with the BBC Overseas department where she meets Count Leo D'Angelo and the two start dating. As well as being a great story about family life the author details the hardships and suffering expereinced by all in wartime but most of all in London which was particularly badly affected by bombing. These books are essential as a way of learning much about the history of life during the war. I wholeheartedly recommend them and can't wait for the next one.
