Delightful story of an East End family, the Brogans, trying to survive and do their bit for the war effort. Part of a series this volume concentrates on 23 year old Francesca Fabrino who, though not a Brogan but very much a part of the family, starts a job in the BBC overseas department. She harbours a secret of being in love with Charlie Brogan, married father, who gradually realises he too is in love with her. His wife, a stripper & adulteress, stands in the way of happiness.

The book is very well researched, especially with the geographical location of streets and known landmarks. The social history is full of life, the elements of food rationing, transport disruptions due to bombing, etc, create a life that takes you right there.

I like the Brogans. They are fully-rounded characters with faults and good points. I hope there are more written about this diverse family.
