A few pages into this book I thought that I recognised some of the characters in the story. Then I realised that I had recently read, and enjoyed ,another book by the same author, Jean Fullerton. This story is the continuation of the lives of a working class London family , The Brogans, during the second world war.
By now the family have settled into a wartime routine of food rations and air raid warnings, which was part of the day to day life of people who lived in London during this time. Their oldest son Charlie is away fighting in the war and has recently been injured. Before he went to war, Charlie had the misfortune of having to marry his girlfriend , Stella, and by now they have a baby son who Charlie has never seen.
While he is still away he finds out some disturbing news about his wife`s activities while he has been fighting. He gets early leave from the army on account of his injury and he goes home to recover and to try to sort things out with his wife. When he gets home he realises that his marriage has ended and his son is not being looked after properly. He also meets somebody from the past who is about to have a huge impact on his life, and the decisions he has to make for the future of his son.
