Truly gripping. One of the most dramatic openings I've ever read.

A Tapping At My Door is out of the traps like a greyhound on speed. The tension in the opening chapter builds and builds, filling you with a deep sense of dread. You know what's coming, know it's not going to be pretty, but are desperate to see what happens. When the victim meets her gruesome end your heart is pounding like an Indian war-drum.

Then the next chapter kicks in and your in the mind of a killer, desperate for revenge, he's going to teach them a lesson, but who are they? This is his message to almost a hundred pairs of eyes, not human though, his audience are of the winged variety. He's doing if for them. Each and every one. The promise of more deaths, more visceral killing, more mystery had me reaching for the corner of the page.

Enter our hero, DS Nathan Cody. This chapter really grounds you. Gives you a sense of place in the world and a sense of a smart arsed but charismatic character, with whom you will be willing to share an adventure into the bleak world of the major investigation team. We're in Liverpool so expect quick whit and smooth dialogue, and that's what Jackson delivers.

The writing oozes class and drags you along at a rate of knots. With an opening like this, the book is destined for great things. Definitely one for the bookshelf of any respected crime reader.
