Another enjoyable tongue-in-cheek murder mystery featuring HM Queen Elizabeth and the Royal Household.
The publication of this second book in the series by S J Bennett coincides with the second book in Richard Osman’s second book in his series about The Thursday Murder Club set in a retirement village. There are lots of similarities, not least the fact that in both books, the police investigation into the murders are being secretly directed by unusual amateur sleuths.
As a reader, I love the feeling that I am part of the Queen’s secret investigation and laugh out loud at some of her actions which are related by the author with such innocence and affection - the image of the Queen standing in a wardrobe and overhearing two of her staff conspiring to commit a crime was deliciously described. The details about the day to day organisation of the Royal household and the Queen’s time and relationships are so credible. I do hope they are true.
Because the books are set in 2017, there’s plenty of time for several future books which include Prince Philip and the entire family before the recent sad and upsetting recent revelations.
I would love to think that the Queen has read these books and approves.
