The second novel in the series, set in 2016, follows on from the first. This book was fantastic. As I mentioned in my assessment of book one, there is a fundamental premise that you must accept in this work. That premise is that the late Queen Elizabeth II spent many years researching and solving murders with the assistance of numerous close aides. That's understandable. This is a work of fiction, not fact. The TV show The Crown uses reality as an impediment to constructing a story, thus this is perfectly fine (and unlike the crown this is not sensationalist nonsense.) This book was fantastic. It's amusing, well-written, and has a terrific blend of real-life and literary characters. This second novel's plot is once again brilliant and works nicely in the setting of royal life. The Queen is excellently represented, and the late great Prince Philip is still a hoot. I'm behind on this series, having started it after the third book arrived. I'm glad to see that book four (due out in February 2024) is set in 1957. The author mentioned hopping around in the Queen's timeline, revealing stories from different decades, which I believe will be interesting. This is a very enjoyable, well-written novel, and I will definitely continue with the series.
