The premise is based on Swan Lake, what would it be like if people could change into birds and fly. This is the ruling class, those with the power to fly ruling over those that are flightless.
Aderyn, is the new 17 year old Protector, of her land, after her father dies. She is flightless since suffering the trauma of her mother's death. She is thrown into the politics and dangers of a society ruled by violence and her uncle. Where her claim to the throne will put her in as much danger as being flightless.
She must travel to the Citadel to fight for her land and to find out the truth of her mother's death and the trauma that has haunted her.
