Swan Lake meets high fantasy in this epic tale of shapeshifters, scheming and political subterfuge.

After the death of her father, 18-year old Aderyn inherits the role of Protector of Atratys, with one slight problem; in a kingdom where only those gifted with the power of flight can rule, Aderyn is flightless, unable to transform after the violent attack that killed her mother and left her scarred for life.

Risking everything, Aderyn journeys to the royal court in an attempt to uncover the truth behind her mother’s murder but she must take care, for if her secret is discovered, she will lose everything.

Initially, I found the book a bit slow to get going, but once Aderyn arrived at court the story started to pick up and from then on I was hooked. There were a couple of your run-of-the-mill, predictable YA tropes (strong MC isn’t a child anymore, hated male character becomes love interest etc.) but overall I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to see how the duology concludes.
