This book did take me a while to get as it is relatively slow paced and there is some worldbuilding that you need to get accustomed to. The political intrigue and the slow burn romance really enthralled me in the second half and I am glad we got a lot off the complex relationships within the royal family and beyond. Some parts were pretty straight forward but it was enjoyable and I would definitely consider picking up the second book for sure. I would definitely recommend it for those who want to get into the fantasy genre and have only read YA as there are a lot of the features, such as the political system, that are similar.
In terms of the retelling aspect I was pleasantly surprised as it really took an inspiration and made it their own which I think is often better than straight forward retelling. In terms of the multiple authors, it is also very well done and at no point feels disjointed like some others I have read.
