I really wasn't sure what to think of this book when I first picked it up and it did take a few pages to get into it. But once it did it was a perfect young adult fantasy read.
Aderyn is the protector Atratys after her father passes away and goes to court, a place where power struggles and subterfuge are a common occurrence. Royals in this universe can transform into species of bird, including Aderyn who once could but can no longer after the death of her mother.
A court Aderyn meets numerous people. Some honest and others very deceiving. A lot of them including her uncle the king do not believe she is capable of being the protector due to her inability to change . She has to work to prove that in fact she is, sacrificing her own happiness and other peoples along the way.
I absoluetley loved this book, a lot more than I thought I would. I believe this is part of a duology and I will be preordering the next one.
