This story is based on Swan Lake and contains elements of betrayal, love and courage.
The central character is Aderyn who was almost 18 when her father died, she gets the role of Protector of Atratys, a dominion in the Kingdom of Solanum. In this kingdom, the nobles can transform into birds and her ancestral bird is a swan. However, she hasn't been able to transform because she witnessed the horrific murder of her mother and she herself was inflicted with both physical as well as emotional scars.
When she becomes the Protector, she decides to go to the royal court in the Citadel so that she can find out what happened to her mother which in turn can ease her pain and enable her to transform again.
Despite finding out what had happened to her mother, she finds out ill things about her family and close relatives. Those that are better left buried. In the story, Aderyn grows as a character and her journey takes an unexpected turn.
I don't normally read fantasy as I find it difficult for me to visualise the settings and characters. However, from the stunning front cover and the synopsis, I was in awe. The authors have done a fantastic job in describing the characters and setting. There's also a family tree and a map of Solanum to aid readers.
