It tells the story of Aderyn. Her father dies just before her seventeenth birthday and so she becomes protector of Atratys a dominion where nobles can change into the bird that represents their family bloodline.
Her ancestral bird is a swan but she hasn't change since her mother's death who was torn apart by hawks that are suppose to be extinct since the war of the Raptors.
Aderyn is now at the mercy of her cruel uncle, the King and his royal court.
Driven by revenge and love she decides to seek the truth about the attack that nearly destroyed her. She must fight for the only home she has ever known and for the land she must protect.
