I loved this! Set in an alternate reality, Game of Thrones-ish, ie, a land's warring factions all vying for the crown of leadership.
The noble houses, all named after birds, it's people are shapeshifters and can transform into their namesake. Non-nobles are flightless and are regarded as menial.
Our heroine, Aderyn, should be able to transform into a swan, but since a hawk attack that badly injured her and killed her mother, she's been unable to shapeshift. This is seen as shameful and has to be kept secret. But after the death of her father she becomes protector of her lands and must attend court.
She is given a clerk, Lucien, to assist her, and his best advice is TRUST NO-ONE. But can she even trust him?
