I went into Throne of Swans not quite knowing what to expect, since the blurb hints at the magical system but doesn't give much else away. However, I was really impressed by the world building and found the story gripping with twists and turns that I didn't see coming. The magical system is unique, but not overdone.
The characters are flawed and nuanced, and I was interested in their journeys from the start. The romantic relationship is there but not particularly prominent, whereas the friendships are very well written.
