In a Throne of Swans you are immediately thrown into the action with atmospheric writing and instant intrigue. We join 17 year old Aderyn at her father's (the King) deathbed after a plague has ravaged their kingdom. After his death, Aderyn becomes ruler; a ruler in a world where people can transform into birds that reflect their lineage (a transformation that Aderyn is incapable of doing).

Aderyn is instantly likable and you can't help but root for her thanks to the clear first person narrative and look into her thoughts. She stands up to the courtiers and shows that she is going to be a strong-willed protagonist from the start.

Th tone is fast paced and the writing style is extremely readable.
The beginning of this book does an excellent job of setting up themes of freedom, duty, family and secrets that will no doubt pervade the remained of the story.
