I really enjoyed this book. The world building is clever and has little subtle touches that really add depth to the world, such as characters using the phrase "in a wingbeat" instead "in a heartbeat".
The characters are believable and the relationships are well written and well developed over the course of the book. I particularly enjoyed the depiction of Aderyn's difficulty with transforming, I felt her (probable) PTSD was well done.
The book has good LGB representation, and it is considered in this world for people to have any sexual orientation, though naturally monarchs have to marry in a way which allows the continuation of the bloodline.
The line between the flightless and the flighted is interesting, particularly as it affects flighted who lose the ability to fly, and how this impacts on Aderyn and her difficulties transforming. This creates complex power dynamics which are engaging to read.
I look forward to the sequel.
