Elisabeth Gifford's novels are always captivating and A Woman Made of Snow is no exception, even the title is intriguing. The book starts in 1949 with the ghost of a woman from long ago who has been buried in the grounds of Kelly Castle in Fife wishing to be found. The author then introduces Caro who in 1944 has given a lift to a coloured serviceman back to his base then moves on to 1949. Caro is now married to Alasdair and has a young baby. Alasdair's mother is the occupant of Kelly castle and the couple stay in the Laundry cottage on the estate. From there the author takes her readers back to 1874 and the family who live in the castle and the young sisters who have stayed with them in their breaks from boarding school. The sisters' father disappeared during an Arctic expedition as did the brother of Aunt Sylvia's brother many years before. Is the Arctic the connection with the titular woman of snow? This is an intriguing mystery, coming from Fife I find it particularly interesting although it will undoubtedly be enjoyed by many readers.
